2002 Four Winns Horizon 180

I recently purchased a used 2002 Four Winns Horizon 180. Spent about 15 minutes on the water and the engine died. Mechanic says that the engine is seized up, and there is possibly metal in the oil. Have there been any other problems like this, and who has been held responsible for this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
