Wayne,
I am also very partial to the Marshall catboat. We have owned a Sanderling since it was new in 1972 and found it to be an excellent boat not just in sailing but in construction. It is still being made now the same way as it was then. The Sanderling is faster than most other catboats and faster than a lot of sloops. It points up well, comes about easily, and is easy to single hand. It has 6" more beam than an HA-18 and a lot more sail area than the comparable Compaq catboats.
I know nothing about the Alerion though I have read some "passionate" posts in favor of that boat. You may have a difficult decision to make.
Howard
