Glenn, I have small rubber plugs that go into my cockpit drains whenever I am under way. If you don't insert those plugs while sailing you will fill your cockpit, particularly in a 2-3 foot sea. Those self bailing cockpit drains are great with the catboat sitting flat...but under sail or power they let more water in than out sometimes. In a tropical downpour I would want them out and they are always out on the mooring or I would find a bathtub every saturday when I go to sail her. Actually, if the centerboard has not been moved recently, that drain can plug up with small bits of junk and won't drain until you lift the board up and down...and occasionally, I use a coat hanger piece to gently push the crap thru. You might look into how other HA folks sail, with or without plugs in. I know the Hermann Catboat folks sail with them in. We also have bigger problems with water sloshing up the centerboard slot when the board is down...so we make a cover for it!
