What are catboats bad at?

Unfortunately, I won't be buying a sailboat this year, but when I do I think a 19' catboat would be just the thing. Here is a question -- why buy anything but a catboat? Can sloops get closer to windward? Do people like having a mast in the middle of the cabin? What is so special about a jib anyway?
