In Response To: Plymouth to Little Egg (Tom Caro)
When my Dad bought our Sanderling from Marshall Maarine in 1972, he and I sailed it from South Dartmouth, Mass. to Bayville, NJ on the Barnegat Bay. It took us 4-1/2 days and we ran on the motor at least half of the time. We went through Fisher Island Sound to avoid the Race and hit Hell Gate on the East River at slack water. We went out at Sandy Hook and back in at Manasquan Inlet. We went through the Manasquan canal at slack water and were in the north end of the Barnegat. You don't want to go through those 2 when the tide is running. We were lucky with the weather but anything can happen. My biggest problem was sunglasses. They weren't dark enough and I ended up taping them to a narrow slit to ease the strain on my eyes. It was a great trip.
