Boat Reviews By Owners

2005 -- 18' 0" MONTEREY

Model: 180FS

Cockpit: The cockpit is OK other than the cap in the center of the steering wheel won't stay on. The instrument cluster is nice looking. The glass however developed a haze to it after about a year that can be seen when you wear polarized sun glasses.

Cabin: No cabin in this boat.

Construction: Construction and design is a nightmare for repairing the engine. Especially servicing the hydraulic reservoir. A non-monterey dealer I took the boat to charged me $75.00 extra last year when I had the annual service done just because of the lack of access to the engine. On top of that, the firewall wood parts are attached by a myriad of screws that nobody ever seems to put back in after servicing the engine. I have already discovered one of the smaller pieces entirely missing - no doubt from a mechanic who didn't feel like contorting himself to get it back on. Its probably only a matter of time before the screw holes in the wood are opened up to the point where it doesn't go back together again. The boat has had a number of electrical problems, including bow light, radio and trim problems.

Handling: The boat handles well. This was my first boat so I don't really have much to compare it with.

Engine Room: The engine is a Volvo. I have had repeated problems with the stern drive. The circuit breakers to the pump, one on the aft top of the engine and a fuse near the pump repeatedly blew. The circuit breaker is an easy reset but the fuse is in the aft engine compartment and very difficult even with my long arms to get to. The dealer finally put in a automatic reset type of fuse but the problem persisted. Finally Volvo sent out a representative and the replaced the entire drive unit. This was after months and months of constant problems and only after I threatened lemon law action. Monterey was absolutely no help and during the entire time the dealer, Monerey, and Volvo each tried to blame the other and everybody tried to make it sound like there wasn't really a problem. All I know is when I'm in the middle of the lake and the drive, on its own, comes full up and then blows the breaker and it will not reset, its not my problem.

General Comments: Read the engine section. Monterey apparently was getting too many good reviews to pay attention to my problem boat. They were not responsive and neither was the dealer. Would I ever buy a Monterey again - NO!
