Boat Reviews By Owners

1974 -- 27' 0" CAL 2-27 SLOOP

Model: Cal 27 ft. sloop

Cockpit: Nice cockpit, tiller steering, comfortable, good visibility from helmsman's position. I added bimini for sun protection.

Cabin: Cabin is fine, but not as well finished as my Catalina 27 but very livable for weekends and day sailing. Would have prefered galley to be on port or stbd side, not under main hatch ladder.

Construction: The Cal 2-27 is VERY well built, OVER-built by today's standards. Strong thick fiberglass in hull, Fin Keel, spade rudder. The ballast is internal lead, no keel bolts to worry about. My boat had volvo md-10a inboard but I changed to Merc 9.9 Bigfoot 4-stroke outboard. Inboard was fine but old, LOVE the outboard. Extra storage below, better control under power, outboard lifts clear of water when sailing.

Handling: Great boat to handle, under sail or power!!! I really like this boat, I've owned larger boats, newer boats (see my Irwin 34 review here) but I really enjoy this Cal 2-27. Great cruiser, gunkholer for weekending in Lake Erie. It was a sad day when Cal Yachts went out of business.

Engine Room: Boat had Volvo-Penta MD-10A inboard engine when I purchased it in 1995. Inboard was fine, worked OK but old, and parts were getting hard to find. I reinforced transom and installed a Mercury 9.9hp four-stroke Bigfoot outboard on a heavy-duty transom bracket. The outboard lifts clear of the water when sailing, powers the boat perfectly. I have much more storage below now (very important in a 27 footer). I liked the boat fine with the inboard but like it much better with the outboard.

General Comments: I've been sailing since the early '70s. I sail Lake Erie out of Sandusky Ohio. The Cal suits my sailing needs as well as any boat I've ever owned. It's quick, stable and easy to single-hand. The hull is strong and well built. The boat powers well with it's Mercury four stroke outboard and gets better milage under power than my 2001 Chevy 2500 Silverado pickup. The interior is not as pretty as my Catalina 27's interior but the Cal will outsail the Catalina. I like my Cal 2-27.
