2001 -- 18' 10" MONTEREY
Model: 190 Montura
Cockpit: The Cockpit is pretty much on the mark. Good size well. I have the jump AFT seats at the transom. I do prefer this seating arrangement over the full bench. I find I remove the two seats for more floor room. Easier boarding. Love the Captains chair at the helm, with flip up bolster. The port side seating slides down to a sun pad that we never use... but its nice to show people... The bow area is set up fine. Storage under the port & starboard cushions and a built-in cooler under the bow cushion that I use everyday (but small). The anchor locker is a little narrow (or the dealer gave me a bigger anchor) not sure which. The anchor comes out only one way (but I have mastered that with no problem.) On the port side the is a large cooler, but it is really just a plastic compartment lined with foam. :) (Ice melts quickly.) Mine was damaged from new, there was a hole in it. The dealer is replacing it. They said Monterey is upgrading the cooler with a real igloo insulated version on newer models. They gave me one of them:) Above the cooler is the glove compartment where you can fit some small stuff, also the radio is in there. That's a good thing except that water was able to get in there. That was re-sealed and fixed the problem. Plenty of drink holders and side storage for a boat that size. Engine compartment is easy to get to, but know fancy gas shocks, which doesn't bother me one bit because they get in the way. The bow speakers are well placed but the other 2 are along side the seats, they could have been placed better. Over all great cockpit and great looking!
Cabin: Open bow...
Construction: This boat is well built, at least to my eye. No creaks in the floor, Seats are well construcked. Windsheald is very sturdy. The hull is as well, Rides very smooth, Thats what passangers have told me. Very good contruction!
Handling: Handles good, but I am a cautious driver, I may not be the best judge on handling. I have the 4.3 190 Volvo, I bought off the show room floor. I would have bought the V8 for no other reason but what I have read in other reviews. The V6 runs great with 2 or 3 people over 50 mph "with the wind". I usually keep her at 27 - 33 mph or 2800 RPM's I have her loaded with 8 adults very often any she does great, could only imagine how the V8 would respond:)
My use is mainly in the South NJ bay area. Took her in the ocean few times, no problems there.
Engine Room: Runs fine with the Volvo V6 with the SX outdrive. I am content with the engine.
General Comments: LOVE the boat, had a few uncharacteristic engine/outdrive problems. Within 15 hours the outdrive blew, one of the seals were not fitted correctly from the factory. Water was getting in oil was getting out. And blew the whole outdrive unit. Towed it to the dealer, and it was fixed. No charge to me. Volvo finally sent a whole new outdrive and initially wanted me to pick up the shipping cost. The dealer fought that for me. I never had to talk to Volvo. During that trip to the shop they installed a dual battery switch for me (as I was unhappy about not having a battery switch at all). At the end of the season I had a valve problem and this was taken care of with no charge to me. Thank God for the warrantee or else this review may have gone a different was.
Although I have had a bit of engine trouble... I did not sway this review in any way. I love the boat, I think Monterey make a great boat, and I will buy Monterey again. Like I said earlier the engine problems I have had were uncharacteristic for Volvo, many people I talked to could not believe that happened to a Volvo.
When buying this boat, I looked at alot of other brands. (you know the ones...) I seems Monterey has seen these boats too. The integrated alot of great features into this boat that I have seen on several others. (One boat had this, another one had that...) Thats why I bought this boat.
Hope this info helps.
