2005 -- 25' 3" CONTENDER
Model: 23 Tournament
Cockpit: Good size cockpit is useful for both fighting big ones, bait prep and landing the big guys.
Cabin: n/a - who needs a cabin, this is a fishing boat, not a camper.
Construction: superior - 3 piece construction with the use of real stringers, not the cheap crappy premolded grid liners used by so many pretenders which hide the internal hull from access from above. Any issues with your hull and you can actually see it on this boat. Glasswork on the hull, liner and deck joints is as good as it gets. Very smooth and professional looking. Interior compartments are all very smoothly finished which makes cleaning them easy, unlike my last Grady White which had such rough interior finish work it was impossible to clean and looked like it had been finished by some vocational school dropout.
Handling: Typical 24.5 Deep V speedster. Tends to go over the waves, not through them. Decent stability with a beam sea, not as good as a boat with a larger beam and shallower V, but that is the price you pay for a Deep V with an 8'6" beam. Very capable in smooth or rough (3-4 foot) seas because of the Deep V. This boat runs as well or better than several 30 footers I have been in.
Engine Room: Twin Yamaha 150HP HPDI's. Very smooth running typical quality Yamaha power system.
General Comments: Great center counsel. This boat excels at fishing either inshore or offshore, is superb as a waterski/board puller - integrated transom and dive ladder make getting in and out of the boat a breeze for skiers, and handles family/friend outings easily.
Expensive, YES, but as with most other things in life you get what you pay for. Construction is superb, unlike so many other companies who claim their construction is great, Contender's actually is. I have owned a Grady White, a Boston Whaler Outrage (only thing outrageous about it was the price for the lack of build quality it had) and an Edgewater CC. NONE of those boats can touch this boat for overall build quality, quality of glasswork and finish, superb access to the bilge and other important mechanical components, and the boats abilty to fly in the rough stuff. Wish I had simply bought a Contender years ago. I would have saved a lot of money versus wading through less expensive but vastly inferior quality boats. Did I say you get what you pay for?
