Boat Reviews By Owners

1983 -- 26' 4" KENNETH H. HESS

Model: Sea Bird Yawl

Cockpit: Standard cockpit with great visibility. Launched in 2003 in Friendship, ME and sailed 2 summers there.

Cabin: Standard cabin sleeps 2 comfortably, 4 in a pinch. Great day sailer as yet to be taken on a long sail. 2 sinks/frig/head. Centerboard takes up some space but can be worked around easily.

Construction: Constructed in Mahogany over white oak with 5200.(?) Teak decks all hand laid. White spruce masts. Hand made top to bottom. He even hand built all the rigging. Said he didn't want to be paying for parts when he could make them better himself.

Handling: She handles well under full sail or under power.

Engine Room: As my father-in-law has passed away I don't have full information but I believe it is powered by a 20hp Dutch engine.

General Comments: The 'Red Knot' was sailed by my father-in-law out of Friendship, ME for 2 summers before his death May 29. He had planned on sailing her in the Chesapeake this year as it was closer to her home in Charlottesville, VA. Her construction was started in 1983 and launched in 2003. Lovingly built and modified to be a beautiful boat. She has her own trailer, engineered by Ken Hess and is quite towable.
