1965 -- 26' 0" OWENS

Model: Flagship Express

Cockpit: Cockpit is large and very capable of cruising with seven passengers plus Captain, or fishing with six. The helm visibility is excellent. We plan on setting up cots and sleeping three adults through the rest of the season, when we camp on the boat. Our Stainless steel BBQ can be attached via an aft rod holder for meals in the marina.

Cabin: The cabin is incredible, for the size of the boat. It includes a V-Berth that sleeps two, and a dinette that converts to a bed, sleeping one large person or two kids. The galley includes the original (perfect condition) sink and an alcohol stove, ice box, a new microwave, and creative storage areas. The Cabin is also outfitted with an inverter to operate the microwave and ceramic heater while out crusing. A portable DVD 8.5 inch DVD player and a mounted Am/FM/CD stereo complete the entertainment package. The head's flushing toilet has been replaced with a porta-pottie, and we use the head for a nice large storage closet for coats and cleaning equipment, etc. The most remarkable feature of the cabin is the large windows common to a sedan style cabin. Our boat has the best of both worlds when it comes to a large, spacious cabin as well as a large cockpit. Most newer boats in the 25-26 foot lengths sacrifice the size of one for the other; either cabin or cockpit. But, the Owens's sedan profile offers both.

Construction: The boat is well built. The hull incorporates mahogany plywood and the topsite employs solid mohogany and veneers. This boat won a best of show award as a display in an Oregon water parade in 1968. But in the 1980's the boat became a "yard boat" in our neighborhood, until we rescued it from it's negligent owner. We spent from 2002 to 2005 restoring it from top to bottom. The bilge area had 4 feet of water in it, completely covering the decks and engine. But, with normal drainage, and drying, we discovered virtually no permanent damage to the hull, or other structures. There were only two areas of venner seperation which were professionally re-glued. One, a four inch area on the bottom, near the port side of the transom was a simple repair. The other was a split on the transom at the starboard seam. We re-glued the section, but needed to paint the entire transom, rather than leave the obvious repair exposed. Our other choice was to replace the entire mahogany veneer on the transom. We decided not to take the "purist route" this time, but worked to keep everything else that we could as original as possible. All of the blue and white vinyl upolstery is original and in excellent condition! Our Boat, renamed "Reelaxation" now has a like new hull, complete new paint, 15 coats of the best varnish, new canvases, new electronics (radar, gps, depth/fish finder, vhf and cb radios and antennas), new wiring, new carpet, new lights, and trim tabs.

Handling: This Owens Flagship handles 3-4 foot seas like a dream. The Bennet Trim Tabs really help this boat's ability to handle waves and swells. It was made for use as a coastal cruiser or big lake boat. It is great on the water, in still or light seas of the Oregon Coast.

Engine Room: Originally,. this boat had a single Flagship 185 hp (283) engine. In 1971, the previous owner put replaced the engine with a Chevy 350 but kept all of the other origninal Ownens external parts. We co,pletely rebuilt the engine in 2004 and have added new exhaust, new carburetor and two new heat exchangers. It has plenty of power, and gets up to 22kts at 2200rpm. It cruises very economically at 10kts/1200rpm. It gets 5 gallons per hour at 8-10 kts.

General Comments: We use the Reelaxation for fishing and cruising on the Oregon Coast. The boat had never been in salt water until 2005, but it handles so well, and we love the coast so much that we decided to make a real sailor out of her. The large cokpit and spacious cabin allow us to camp on her, fish or cruise. We keep her at the Newport Marina(South Beach), in Newport Oregon.
