Boat Reviews By Owners
1981 -- 20' 2" THUNDERBIRD
Model: Formula 20
Cockpit: Cockpit seats 6 with back to back seats and 2 jump seats aft on either side of engine cover. Boat lends itself well to Crusing, Waterskiing, Fishing.
High freeboard and safe for youngsters.
Open bow is comfortable for two adults and has lots of storage. Bow rides dry in most conditions.
Construction: Thunderbird used good glass and is well scheduled. I found the underdeck stringers to be fully encapsulated in glass as well as the underside of the deck. Deep engine compartment that requires a good sizes bilge pump to afford the proper lift. Good access to the engine area for eng. maint.
Handling: My boat has a factory installed OMC 260. The deep V hull has plenty of strakes and the boat tracks well, is very responsive and FAST. I handles chop and sweel with ease and has a soft ride. The hard chine aft also holds well in a following sea. I have operated the boat in lakes, rivers, San Francisco Bay and out the Golden Gate.(Not reccomended for a novice boater)
I call the hull design forgiving even in a hard turn at speed.
Engine Room: OMC 260 I/O
A perfect H.P., but I am not thrilled with the OMC Trim/Tilt system. The units are placed in the bilge and subject to water intrusion. I would prefer Volvo or Mercury. However the drive has been solid in the years I have owned it.
General Comments: It has been a great all around family boat. I have used it for camping, crusing, waterskiing and have used it in my business. It also became the boat of choice for our local Boy Scout Troop in earning a water ski meritt badge! Thunderbird made a limited number of these hulls. Lakes, rivers and bays. It has been used in the open ocean being mindfull of weather and sea conditions.
